Report calls for action in 11 areas
to improve adolescents’ writing skills.

    Contending that “few high school students write well enough to meet the need of employers or colleges,” a new report from the Alliance for Excellent Education recommends 11 classroom strategies to help students become better writers. The report, Writing Next: Effective Strategies to Improve Writing of Adolescents in Middle and High Schools, was commissioned by the Carnegie Corporation of New York.

Bill Hittman,
of LakeView Technology Academy in Pleasant Prairie, WI

    Bill Hittman had been a superintendent for 17 years before he became principal of Wisconsin’s LakeView Technology Academy. Now he’s found he’s closer to the action and enjoying seeing growth in both teachers and students.

     
   “I could certainly make things happen as a superintendent, but now I’m directly impacting kids,” he explains. “I can make something happen that is really sustainable in working to transform this school. My biggest pleasure is watching our teachers grow not just as teachers but also personally.”

     Hittman had a diverse professional career before coming to Lake View. Upon graduation, he began in business and industry, then worked as a tech ed teacher, assistant principal, program administrator, business manager before becoming a superintendent.

“Little acts of kindness can have huge results.”

     That encouragement, which Darrell Scott shared during the Institute’s second general session, is the legacy of his daughter, Rachel, one of 12 students killed in the Columbine High School tragedy April, 1999. Scott now coordinates “Rachel’s Challenge,” a program that goes into middle and high schools to encourage students to be kind and compassionate.
