“Negatives can always become positives,” Luis Valdez, an awarding winning producer told principals during the final Institute general session.
He also proposed four areas that school leaders should assure receive attention in their schools:
- bilingual/bicultural education, which is really multicultural;
- understanding economic independence so students can “take care of their money;”
- creating discipline so that youngsters understand they can be creative but still have to apply discipline to their efforts such as meeting deadlines; and
- artistic excellence.
Calling himself an educator as well as an actor, Valdez said schools can not neglect “life lessons” if they are to prepare students for the future. He urged principals to maintain arts and sports programs in their schools because students learn best when they also have opportunities for movement.
