The Reponses:
At
Wyandotte High School in KCK, what we have placed
all of our 9th graders in different SLC's with
themes. The kids
are signed up out of MS and they are in SLC's for
four years. We have special activities for
them prior to school starting in August.
There
is a lot more.

Our
locker assignments are completely heterogeneous.
We have freshmen next to
seniors, next to sophomores, etc. When a student
enters as a freshman, they are assigned a locker
which is their locker for all four years. The person
beside them may be a senior or a junior that
can help advise where a classroom is, what to do
to sign up for Student Council, or any of a host
of
other questions a freshman may have. By the time
the freshmen
are upperclassmen, they will have younger kids lockering
next to them and they can pass the kindness on. No
more intimidating 'senior hallways.'

We are planning on implementing a new 9th grade Transition
Program for the fall of 2006. Like most high
schools across the nation, a major concern is the number
of freshmen who tend to get lost in their new
school and consequently fail to graduate with their class.
Our focus is to reduce the % of students failing
to graduate with their classmates on time.
This program focus on many components and is still in the developmental
stage. Currently, we are researching curriculum
ideas for implementation. We are planning on it being ready
by fall. A program overview
is attached.
Feel free
to contact me with any questions, or if you
have any input that you have had success with
using a
similar program.
Thank you. Ken
