MILWAUKEE PUBLIC SCHOOLS RECOGNIZES
PRINCIPALS’ PARTNERSHIP

Marty Lexmond (second from left), director of high school reform, Milwaukee Public Schools, presents an Award of Gratitude and Recognition, to Darlynn Herwig, director, Union Pacific Foundation, during the fourth annual Principals’ Partnership Summer Leadership Institute.     The Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) has honored The Principals’ Partnership, a unique professional development program for public high school principals that is sponsored by Union Pacific Foundation, for efforts in calling attention to the importance of school leadership.

“We are taking ideas from The Partnership and replicating them as we work to develop small learning communities and small high schools in Milwaukee,” explained Marty Lexmond, MPS director of high school redesign. “It is essential that the work of principals and other school leaders be acknowledged and valued.”

The Award of Gratitude and Recognition was presented May 20 by Superintendent Bill Andrekopoulos and John Polczynski, principal, Milwaukee School of Entrepreneurship, to Howard Jennings, consultant, Principals’ Partnership, during a dinner in Milwaukee.

MPS is starting the third year of implementing the small learning community and small high school models. Currently, two schools have implemented the small learning community philosophy and another three will in September. Ten schools are using the small high school model with eight more being added this fall.

It’s essential that there be a common focus in this movement,” Lexmond said. “We are seeing that the schools which are implementing these programs in Milwaukee have principals who clearly communicate that focus to others in the school.”

Lexmond explained that principals frequently are not recognized for their leadership, and the honoring of school leaders is a focus of The Principals’ Partnership that MPS is replicating in its reform efforts.
