ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
HONORS UNION PACIFIC
OMAHA,
Neb., April 28, 2006 – Union Pacific will be honored
Monday, May 1, by the Arizona Department of Education (ADE)
for its support of high school principals. The company
will receive the ADE’s “Spotlight on Success” award
in recognition of The Principals’ Partnership, a
program that provides support to high school principals.
Twenty-five principals from Arizona are enrolled
in the program, representing the Nogales, Tucson Unified,
and Yuma school districts. In 2006, Union Pacific expanded
The Partnership to reach more than 1,000 principals and 21
states. It is estimated that The Partnership, through the
participating principals, will affect approximately 71,000
teachers and 1 million students. Arizona principals joined
the five-year-old program in 2004.
Angela Julien, principal of
Rincon High School in Tucson, recommended Union Pacific
for the award. The ADE
selected UP as an honoree after an extensive review of The
Principals’ Partnership program.
"The partnership with Union Pacific has
allowed the high school principals in Tucson Unified School
District to study cutting-edge research and network with
excellent principals from across the United States,” Julien
said. “The Principals’ Partnership consultants
have helped us create a strategic plan that will move TUSD
high schools from good to great."
Jim Sims, Superintendent for
UP’s Tucson
Service Unit, will accept the ADE award on behalf of Union
Pacific and The Principals’ Patnership at the ADE’s
second annual Spotlight on Success Awards Dinner at 6 p.m.
May 1 at the Tucson Sheraton Hotel & Suites.
“Union Pacific created The Principals’ Partnership
because we believe strong leaders build strong schools,” said
Bob Turner, senior vice president for corporate relations. “Principals
are the leaders in high schools and we want to support their
commitment and dedication to provide an environment where
quality learning can take place.”
The Principals’ Partnership is the signature
charitable giving program of the Union Pacific Foundation.
Under the program, Union Pacific provides an education consultant
to work one-on-one with high school principals, on any issue
identified by principals. The program also provides development
opportunities for principals throughout the year, including
an all-expenses-paid, professional summer conference. There
is no cost to principals or school districts for any Principals’ Partnership
activity.
“Union Pacific has proven itself to
be a great corporate citizen by partnering with school districts
in Tucson, Nogales and Yuma,” said Tom Horne, Arizona
Department of Education Superintendent. “This is a
great opportunity for integrating best practices and developing
education leadership through the Union Pacific Principal
Partnership program. It is in the best interest of employers
to help students soar academically so that we can strengthen
our nation's economy and develop a well-trained and highly-educated
workforce."
In addition to the Arizona Department
of Education honor, The Principals’ Partnership has
been recognized by state education associations in Wyoming,
Utah, and Idaho,
as well as the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
